We took our first real family vacation to Sea World San Antonio this week. It was successful if I must say! We had a great time even through the heat, a nearly 3 year old, and a 9 week old. Our decision to go in the dead of summer was largely due to us being cheap – we wanted to get Sara there before she turned 3. It was really a good trip (Wednesday through Friday), and I have a few things to list that we learned.

General Travel

1. Don’t feed a toddler a Fiber One bar for breakfast before a road trip. I’ll let you, dear reader, figure out why for yourself.

2. Plan for an extra hour or two of travel time due to number 1

3. Yes, San Antonio really is a destination city.

4. Check for hotel deals just before you leave. We had a $125/night hotel booked, but a Groupon for $73/night (with breakfast and parking) on the Riverwalk came through the day before we left. We bought 2 and saved a bunch! The hotel was the El Tropicana – the first hotel on the Riverwalk. Think ‘60s swank. It was great and all I could think of was AMC’s Mad Men. This image was even stronger when seeing the pool – particularly at night. Everything was ‘60s except maybe the fake grass!

5. I’m not a taxi guy, but it was worth taking a taxi home late at night with a tired toddler and hungry baby.

6. Check for all your belongings when leaving a taxi with a tired toddler and hungry baby. We left our diaper bag. Oh well – minor loss, but a great bag.

7. Take the taxi receipt when offered (see #6)

8. Pay cash for everything! It is fantastic to not have to worry about some plastic to pay off when you get home (see Dave Ramsey or even the Bible for that matter)

In the Park

1. Look into buying year long passes. Parking is $15 per day. Year Pass holders get free parking plus 20% off many purchases in the park.

2. Sea World offers a $29.95 all you can eat deal. This is a rip off IMHO. You can only use it in the restaurants, and unless you plan on eating 5 times per day you don’t need it. For us, we could all just split a sandwich or two for $9. It was so hot that’s all we really had an appetite for.

3. Yeah yeah – we’re not the smallest folks, but it was obvious that many park-goers were taking full advantage of #2.

4. Buy the $8.99 collector’s sport cup! It costs $1 for refills and if you go in the summer you’ll spend $3 to $5 on refills. Totally worth it! We refilled with lemonade slushies, clear sodas, and water.

5. Spread your park visit over multiple days if you can swing it. Our trip was immensely more pleasurable since we weren’t worried about trying to fit everything in in too short a time. We did some shows and oriented ourselves with the park on day 1, shows and waterpark on day two, and shows, attractions, and rides on day 3.

6. I can’t stress this enough – THERE IS NO MORE FREE BEER. I guess that Busch used to be more involved. Our last trip was blessed with free tasting – not this time, and we were really looking forward to it only to find out they were now $6.50 a pop. Consequently, the bar was empty!

Park Attractions

1. The Shamu shows just aren’t really good anymore – particularly the night show. I know, you can’t go to Sea World without seeing Shamu, but it’s just not that great anymore…maybe if you want to sit up front and possibly get splashed, but we just didn’t feel it. Plus, the stupid song they play through the whole afternoon show made me want to gag.

2. Azul is pretty cool – very Cirque du Soleil

3. Pay to feed the dolphins – it is worth it if you have kids. If you don’t, well…whatever. The park doesn’t really have anything to offer you if you don’t have kids.

4. The kids splash park is completely concrete! Maybe I’ve been spoiled at fancy splash parks, but Hey, Sea World, they’ve got this great cushy rubber material that you should use! Running kids, crowds, and concrete always covered with water is bad news waiting to happen! Luckily, we had no knee scrapes or anything, but I can see it happening.

5. The Elmo 4D experience is fun (and air conditioned). I’m generally not a fan of 3D movies, but it was awesome to see the kids reaching out trying to touch things coming out of the screen.

6. Go see the penguins (also air conditioned). Penguins are always fun, and there’s a moving walkway…again, always fun.

7. The Cannery Row Caper is always worth seeing. Seals and Otters make me laugh – enough said. Go feed them during times well away from show times at the Rocky Point Preserve. It is less crowded.

This post is already too long, and I should be in bed after driving home. All in all, very fun, and I’ve got great kids and a great wife.

Another long spell has passed since my last post, but that is how they seem to go.  We’ve had Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years in that time and as with any budding family a lot has happened.  Sometimes I long for a time when I can go two or three months between posts and come back to say “Nothing has happened here.  Same ol’ same ol’.”  I guess that is not my lot, though, and I’m happier for it too!

We went to California for Thanksgiving and stayed with Aimee’s mother and grandmother.  Aimee and Sara actually went out a week before me as this would be our last visit while Aimee’s mother was still living there.  She mostly went to see friends and help her mom pack up and finish going through things.  When I arrived the following week our anniversary had just passed so we left Sara with Grandma (her first extended time away from Mommy) and drove up to Santa Barbara.  We did some wine country touring up in the mountains and really just relaxed.  For those that didn’t know, Aimee went to school at UCSB and absolutely loves it there.  I, in all honesty, do too – you’d have to see my twitter feed for more on that though (maybe I’ll post about my infatuation loveintense belief in’value recognition of’ hate of most “social networking”).  By the time we returned from our little vacation my family had arrived in the Inland Empire and we had Thanksgiving dinner at my sister’s house.  Aimee managed to  have our flight home switched from Friday morning to Saturday morning (for free – she pulled the baby card) so we were able to spend another day at her mom’s.

Our next big event – at least that I can remember – was Aimee’s mother’s big move!  The movers came the second week of December, packed up all of her stuff, and we accepted it at her new Texas home a few days later!  Aimee’s mother came along shortly thereafter with a packed GMC.

While she was getting all settled, Aimee, Sara, the dogs, and myself trekked down to Houston to celebrate Christmas with my family.  Everybody had a great time.  Sara got a rocking horse which she absolutely loved!

Rockin!

A particularly wonderful blessing this season was that we had the opportunity to spend Christmas at our own home for the first time.  Our family met Aimee’s mother and grandmother at church after I got home from work for the children’s Christmas Eve service and then followed that with dinner.  I had to be back at church to accompany a brass quintet at the 8 and 11 o’clock services.

Oh – did I mention that we had a blizzard on Christmas Eve in Dallas?  There was not a whole lot of snow, but there was a lot of it blowing around causing dangerous drifts.  Needless to say, the weather cut back a bit on church attendance.  I made it home safely though by about 12:30 am.

We awoke to a leisurely, beautiful morning on Christmas day.  Sara actually slept in a little bit and Aimee let me sleep too.  As we were eating breakfast we noticed that Sara had left the table and seemed strangely quite.  When we went to find her she was on the hearth beginning to open presents!  We let her go through a few and then we all (including Jack and Frank) went out front to play in the snow.  Sara needed a nap before she could go through the rest of her gifts, but that worked out well because she could nap until Grandma and Great Grandmom arrived for lunch.  All in all it was a great day.

Christmas Morning Snow

The big news for today is that Sara said some words!  Now – she has been communicating for quite some time…we think that “graps” (read Grapes) was really her first word, but today came some new ones.  We noticed last week that she was beginning to try to mimic what we were saying when we spoke to her, and we knew that it would be very soon.  Today, as Sara and Aimee walked through the market (getting Sara’s daily snack samples) she pointed at the fish tank and said “FISH“!  Exciting, I know!  This was followed later in the day by “BALL” and “PISA” (I brought pizza home from Sam’s Club for dinner).  So, we can now tell everybody that in the last three weeks Sara has had 6 teeth come in and has decided to start using her words.  I’m glad that she has finally listened to me on this as I have been encouraging it since she was about 6 months old…I told her to just “use your words” and “tell us what was wrong” instead of crying and screaming about it.  Now that she has words somehow I still feel like we’ll still hear the crying and screaming (by my count the next time will be in approximately 7.5 hours).

WOW! It’s been way too long since I gave an update…a little less than 5 months to be precise. I have an excuse, though – I was going to change web site hosts so I had a full back-up of my site and I didn’t want to add anything to until I was at a new host. Alas, I’ve decided to stick with my current service as I haven’t had the problems that I previously experienced.

So, this could be a long post, but I’ll try to keep it as short as possible. Let’s do Sara first. We last left off after Sara’s 6th month on God’s green earth. Hmmm…can I remember what has happened so long ago? Sara has a total of four teeth now, and is ever changing. She’s got a head of curly blonde hair. You wouldn’t know it, but that’s the same as her mother and I both had until we were 5-6. Sara’s is actually a little darker than ours was, though. She’s a super crawler now too. We had a couple of months where she would only low crawl around on her belly, but one day around 9 months she rocked back on her knees and realized that she could get around faster that way.

I absolutely love taking photos of Sara…as you’ll see she has really changed a lot. We started taking her to the Dallas Arboretum which was a great opportunity to get outside and have some new photo settings to use. Here come the photos, etc.

Sara Months 7-10

Sara Months 7 – 10

In June, Sara (and Jason) got to go to their first family reunion in southern Illinois.  This was the 91st Swallow Family Reunion for Aimee’s side of the family.  It was a good trip.  We started in St. Louis, drove to Whitehall, IL, and then back to St. Louis via Hannibal.  I’ve got to say that the only downside of the whole trip was leaving Dallas where we had a 6 hour delay due to rain.  Sara is just like any little baby, though, in that she loves to explore. I finally had to start baby proofing the cabinets and other things. However, since I’ve done that she found out that she could go in an out of the doggy door on her own. We let her do so for the most part because she doesn’t like to leave the door step. Also, she took a couple of steps on her own a week before her first birthday, but nothing since then. Because of that we’ve decided to put her in the toddler/walker nursery room when we’re at church in hopes that she’ll pick up that skill from the other kids.  I think that once she realizes that walking is faster than crawling she’ll choose that instead.

Finally, what else do I say…Aimee and Jason are fine – all is well in the hood.  I am really trying to learn more about my photography hobby.  I really enjoy it; I just have to keep it on the cheap.  You can check out my stuff on Flickr here Jason’s Flickr
